Improving veteran care through clinician-centered task management.
The VA's Clinical Decision Support (CDS) suite is designed to make clinicians' lives easier, integrate with the electronic health record, and ultimately improve care for veterans. As lead designer — and researcher — on the Task Management application within CDS, I drove discovery, design, and iterative delivery for a tool now used by thousands of clinicians across disciplines including mental health, primary care, and oncology. The work replaced a defunct legacy application and continues to evolve.
Approach
Led discovery research with clinicians across specialties to map workflows, surface pain points, and build a shared understanding of what task management needed to do across vastly different care contexts.
Designed core features including patient context integration with the EHR, task templates, action items, and custom views — reducing friction and keeping veteran care from falling through the cracks.
Migrated thousands of active users from a legacy system while continuing to deliver improvements based on ongoing clinician feedback.
Embedded a culture of listening: collaborated with a cross-functional team of engineers, a PM, and HCD specialists to ensure the design process consistently reflected real clinical needs.
Clinicians report the tool has meaningfully improved the care they can offer veterans — with faster, more efficient task completion and handoff, and consistent feedback that the team has been heard.
