Increasing Access to Justice in California Courts

In collaboration with Exygy Design, I had the opportunity to contribute to the early creation of a design system and web applications for the JCC (Judicial Council of California). Our mission was to construct a versatile component-based pattern library and UI system capable of meeting the diverse needs of Californians and the various branches of the court system. To kickstart this project, I lead a design discovery workshop, gaining insights into client and user requirements, as well as the overall landscape of the design needs. Our work encompassed user flows, style guides, system templates, research, testing with clickable prototypes, and successful product launches.

Approach

  • Design Workshop: Collaborated with stakeholders and content managers to establish design and brand principles.

  • Created design concepts to define the design system's direction and usage within the JCC branches.

  • Focused on creating a user-centric UX/UI system to simplify information retrieval, form-filling, and accessibility.

  • Ongoing discovery exploring the Self-Represented Litigation landscape in California.

  • Worked closely with JCC researchers and staff to conceptualize, prototype, and test tools for improved information access and legal navigation.

Designed and launched a user-friendly "Self Help Portal" for easier access to information and resources in the California courts.

  • Developed a comprehensive component-based library adaptable to various JCC branches' unique needs

  • Our team launched "Find My Court" Tool: Created a public-facing tool for collecting information about California's 296 courthouses in one accessible place.

  • Trial Court Templates and CMS: Established component-based templates for Drupal sites across California Trial Courts, promoting consistency and best practices across Trial Court web systems.
